As Somalia undergoes an important political transition, preparations for local council elections are underway in several districts. Galkayo—a district uniquely administered by both Galmudug State in the south and Puntland State in the north—plays a pivotal role in fostering peaceful civic engagement during this period.
With support from @pbf_Somalia, Somali Peace Line (SPL), in collaboration with @lpi_voice, organized a three-day training in Galkayo on nonviolent political participation and electoral processes. The initiative aimed to strengthen the capacity of youth and community actors to engage constructively and responsibly in democratic processes.
The training brought together SD moderators and youth participants, creating a platform for dialogue, reflection, and learning on the role of citizens in shaping peaceful political outcomes. Participants examined electoral systems, citizens’ rights and responsibilities, and the importance of nonviolent engagement in political spaces.
Special attention was given to the risks associated with electoral processes in fragile contexts, highlighting how informed and responsible participation can contribute to conflict prevention and stability. The training also emphasized gender inclusion, addressing barriers that limit women’s political participation and underscoring the importance of equal representation.
Through scenario-based exercises, role plays, and group discussions, participants applied theoretical knowledge to practical situations, strengthening their confidence and readiness to participate in civic processes.
Overall, the training deepened participants’ understanding of democratic participation, reinforced their commitment to nonviolence, and empowered them to promote peaceful and inclusive electoral processes within their communities. Somali Peace Line (SPL) continues to support peaceful, violence-free elections while encouraging the active participation of youth, women, and marginalized groups in Somalia’s democratic development.
