On 19th May 2024, Somali Peace Line (SPL) organized a quarterly Civil Society Consultation meeting in Jowhar, Somalia. The meeting was attended by representatives from various civil society organizations operating in the region.
The focus of the discussions during the meeting was on the significant challenges facing people with disabilities and the advocacy efforts of disability working groups to address the issues of disability communities.
The key topics discussed during the consultation meeting included:
• Barriers to access and inclusion for persons with disabilities in social, economic, and political spheres.
• Gaps in the provision of healthcare, rehabilitation, and assistive devices for people with disabilities.
• Challenges faced by disability-focused organizations in advocating for the rights and needs of their constituents.
• The role of the government and other stakeholders in ensuring the full participation and empowerment of people with disabilities.
After the productive discussions, the participants collaboratively developed an advocacy plan to address the issues raised during the meeting. The advocacy plan outlined the following key components:
1. Targeted advocacy campaigns to raise awareness about the challenges faced by people with disabilities among policymakers, the general public, and other influential stakeholders.
2. Engagement with local and national government authorities to advocate for the implementation of disability-inclusive policies and programs.
3. Capacity-building initiatives to strengthen the advocacy skills and organizational capacities of disability-focused civil society organizations.
4. Establishment of a coordination mechanism among the participating organizations to ensure a unified and strategic approach to disability advocacy.
5. Monitoring and evaluation frameworks to track the progress and impact of the advocacy plan.
The participants expressed their commitment to work together to execute the advocacy plan and to continue their efforts to promote the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities in Somalia.
